Submit and Resist

Have you ever tried so hard to resist a thought, a temptation, or a fear that it seemed to grow louder?

I have. Sometimes I tell myself, Stop worrying. Be stronger. Don’t let this get to you. But the more I rely on my own strength, the more tired I feel.

James 4:7 gives us two instructions in a meaningful order: submit to God, then resist the devil. Before the fight, there is surrender.

Submitting to God means bringing Him what is really happening inside us. We can tell Him, “Lord, I’m afraid.” “I’m angry.” “I’m tempted to give up.” We don’t have to pretend we’re strong when we come to Him. We can ask Him to guide our next choice.

Then we resist. Sometimes that looks like turning away from a harmful habit. Sometimes it means refusing to believe a lie about our worth. Sometimes it means pausing before we react and choosing to pray instead.

Resistance may still feel difficult. We may need to make that choice again tomorrow. But we don’t have to face it alone. God meets us in our surrender and helps us take the next faithful step.

The pause for today
What have you been trying to fight in your own strength? Take a moment to name it before God. Ask Him what it would look like to submit to Him and resist it today.

A simple prayer:
Lord, I give You the fear, temptation, or struggle I’ve been carrying. Help me hear Your truth, trust Your care, and choose what honors You today. Amen.
